The agreement bound individual currencies to the US Dollar which in turn was backed by gold \u2013 all to make our currencies more stable and prevent strong volatility in the markets. In 1971 however, the so-called Gold Standard was abolished. Since then, the majority of currencies and the global monetary system are based on <\/span><b>FIAT structures<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> \u2013 which is money without any physical
